Overview
The origin of Panch Kedar is steeped in mythology and devotion. According to ancient lore, after the great war of Mahabharata, the Pandavas were overwhelmed with guilt for killing their own kin. Seeking atonement for their sins, they approached Lord Krishna, who advised them to worship Lord Shiva—the only deity capable of granting them absolution. However, Lord Shiva, deeply disheartened by the bloodshed of the war, decided to avoid the Pandavas. To evade them, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull and wandered into the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Bhima, the strongest of the Pandavas, recognized him and tried to catch hold of the bull. As Bhima seized the bull by its hump, Lord Shiva disappeared into the earth, scattering his body parts across five locations. These five spots became sacred and are collectively known as Panch Kedar.
